HELP US CHANGE LIVES IN THE ROCHESTER COMMUNITY

Our Project

Mt. Hope Family Center provides intervention and prevention programs to more than 900 at-risk children and families annually. Our services aim to help heal and strengthen families toward independence, however, we often discover that the children and families we serve have additional critical needs. We are in urgent need of funding that covers basic needs in emergency situations. Your philanthropic support of this project will help purchase these items for so many families in need:

  • Emergency food

  • Baby care and safety (formula, diapers, wipes, car seats, baby gates, outlet covers, cupboard latches, strollers, baby cribs, highchairs, mattresses, bedding, etc.)

  • Security deposits for rent or utility deposits/arrearages (sometimes for moving into a safer neighborhood or trying to escape domestic violence)

  • Clothes:  Interview clothing--slacks, shirts, shoes when needed; winter jackets, shoes, boots, etc.

  • School Supplies:  folders, notebooks, binders, loose-leaf paper, pens, pencils, calculators, book bags, calendars, etc.

  • Bus passes:  Monthly bus passes for education and employment or daily bus passes to attend interviews, doctor visits, etc.

  • Essential furnishings and supplies for home, e.g. pots and pans

  • Toiletries (for bathroom and hygiene supplies)

  • Emergency car repairs

  • Items and/or resources to help with self-sufficiency (for example, fees and training to obtain driver’s license or to obtain GED)

Your Impact

Your support will help to provide warmth, safety, and security to a family in need this winter. Most importantly, your contribution will help to ensure that parents and children can continue making progress in the intervention and prevention programs that allow them to heal and strengthen their families. Any contribution counts and will make an immediate and lasting impact on a family in our community.

About Mt. Hope Family Center

"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men," said the famous 19th century human rights leader and Rochesterian Frederick Douglass.

Our team at Mt. Hope Family Center believes in this ethos and we have been dedicated to helping children and families for over 35 years.  We know every child should have the opportunity to grow to their fullest potential and achieving this requires the right kind of support.

Mt. Hope Family Center is affiliated with the department of Clinical and Social Sciences in Psychology at the University of Rochester. We provide critically-needed intervention and prevention services to children and families so they have the chance to become stronger individuals who grow to be independent and successful.  We continue to help children who have experienced various types of trauma, young mothers who are depressed and may be struggling to parent their children, and military families whose loved ones have served our country and are navigating challenges.

We know healing psychological illness is as important as mending physical wounds.  Helping our families heal through our evidence-based therapies, such as interpersonal psychotherapy, child-parent psychotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, is critical to long-term wellness and success.

Today, we understand mental health is multi-faceted.  Because of this, we like to help our families in other tangible ways.  We are in constant need of funding for emergency purposes not covered by our grants or other funding sources.  Our emergency fund covers items like baby formula and diapers, food, utility bills, bus passes, just to name a few.

The team at Mt. Hope Family Center serves hundreds of children and families annually in our community through our intervention and prevention services and our research work in the areas of child maltreatment, trauma, depression, and poverty is known worldwide.
